Report: Israel hacker stages retaliatory data leak (AP)

JERUSALEM ? An Israeli hacker has posted information online about hundreds of Saudis, Egyptians, Syrians and others ? a new salvo in the cyber war launched by an alleged Saudi hacker who leaked details about thousands of Israelis last week, an Israeli newspaper reported Wednesday.

The information was posted on the pastebin site late Tuesday by a hacker who identified himself as a soldier in an Israeli intelligence unit, the Yediot Ahronot daily said. He said he was not afraid of a "hacking war" between Israeli and Arab hackers.

"Dozens of Israeli sites are hacked every day anyway," he said. "I believe that the minute information becomes available it should be disclosed. We have reacted too feebly, in my opinion."

He disclosed the information just hours after a top Saudi banking official denied an earlier Yediot report that Israeli hackers had culled credit card and bank account details of thousands of Saudi citizens and were threatening to release the information if hackers continued to publish Israeli credit card details on line.

The Israeli hackers who reportedly obtained the data told Yediot that the soldier was a rogue member of their group who leaked the information without consulting them. Such leaks are considered a crime in Israel.

The hacking war erupted last week when hackers identifying themselves as group-xp, a known Saudi hacking group, claimed to have gained access to 400,000 Israeli credit card accounts. Israeli authorities said 15,000 accounts were hacked, and an Israeli hacker said he traced the leaks to a 19-year-old man from the United Arab Emirates studying in Mexico.

Days later, a hacker claiming to be a 19-year-old Saudi national, using the pseudonym 0xOmar, posted credit card details and personal information of 6,000 thousand Israelis online and contended he had access to tens of thousands of other accounts.

It was not possible to independently verify the hackers' claims.
