Do you want to be an employee or your own employer ...

Everyone will think at one time or another, ?I want to be my own boss!?. Do you have a great idea? Well maybe now is a good time to try it out.

A lot of people are turning their hobbies into businesses, such as Hannah Nuttall who set up a jewellery business, HannahMakesThings, in order to support herself whilst at university. She comments that networking (in person and online) was key to the success of her business,

?Networking isn?t just for corporate types ? young creatives also need to channel their own networks. As well as one-to-one contact, I keep in touch using social media ? I get useful feedback from a ready-made focus group just a tweet away.?

Betty Bee, a ?vintage botherer, Photographer, Writer for various publications and owner of a beautiful online shop? has written a fantastic guide to sassy self-employment, outlining the DOs and DON?Ts and sharing what she?s learnt along the way. She has made a career by managing a website, blogging about and selling retro and vintage fashions and delivering workshops on topics around self-employment.

One of our own Employability Advisers in the careers team, Rebecca Douglas, has set up a successful photography business, Rebecca Douglas Photography, using her skilled photographer?s eye, creativity, and by spreading the word through social networks. She uses Facebook and Twitter to their full potential, showcasing her photos and talking to potential customers and those in the industry. She has created a beautiful website: her own, online shop window for her wares.

If you don?t want to go out on a limb and be self-employed, joining a start-up can give you the hands-on experience of working in a small company, but without the risk. Coworking spaces are popping up around Kent, such as Fruitworks in Canterbury and coFWD in Rochester. These are buildings where self-employed people and start-ups can work in the same office, sharing resources and tea and cake!
