As a business owner or manager, there are basically two ways in which you can spend your time. The first is working within the business. This includes every level of operations, from customer service to sales to production to accounting. The second option is strategic thinking?high level analysis, thought, and planning. Examples of strategic thinking include creating a business development plan or developing new systems of production and fulfillment.

Strategic thinking is working on your business?planning, strategizing, analyzing the market, adjusting course, etc. Working?within?your business is essentially keeping the systems running.

For a business to be successful, both levels of engagement are vital. Without a skilled team to operate the business, nothing happens. And without high-level planning, the business has no direction or strategic purpose.

Unfortunately, most small business owners spend virtually all of their time operating their business, and no time thinking strategically about it. It?s not hard to understand why?as a one-man shop (or even as the leader of a small team), there?s always something demanding attention. Upset customers, employees calling in sick, suppliers showing up late? it?s one thing after the next.

But the net result is a business that is floating aimlessly through the marketplace, going wherever the current may take it. In order to build an exceptional business, you must devote the necessary time to?strategic planning. That can be a challenge?but here are three solutions that may help:

1) Prioritize your planning time as if it were a client.?If a client or a customer needed to sit down with you for 30 minutes this week, I guarantee that you?d find a way to make it happen. Schedule time each week (30 minutes, an hour, whatever you think is necessary) for strategic planning and treat it like a client engagement.

2) Find an accountability partner.?Ideally, this would be a fellow business owner?but a friend or family member can work. Tell the individual that you recognize the need for strategic planning, and ask them to check in on you each week to make sure that you?re spending the necessary time. Accountability can make all of the difference for an exercise like this!

3) End each strategic session with an action list.?If you can?t translate your strategic thinking into action, there?s no point. Identify 1-3 action items that will help you accomplish your big-picture objectives. Get specific?include a timeline and identify which employees are responsible for each element. Creating an action list is the bridge between planning and operations?and it?s 100% necessary.

As a small business owner, it?s easy to overlook the importance of strategic?thinking. But if you wish to create a healthy, sustainable business, it?s vital that you spend time planning on a regular basis. These tips will help you make time?so put them into effect starting today. You can?t afford not to!

DoubleTwist Player gets an update, now supports pinned Google Play Music tracks

The folks at doubleTwist have updated their Android app to version 1.7.3, and it brings a pretty nice change log along with. In addition to playing your music collection from the device and syncing to your Windows or Mac computer, you can now play music you have downloaded and pinned from Google Play Music. We gave it a quick test and sure enough -- music downloaded and pinned is accessible through the doubleTwist player as well as across the network through the doubleTwist media server. This is a great addition for those that need to sync their music or simply prefer to not use drag and drop to copy songs.

In addition to the Google Play Music tool, album art search and download has been improved, AirPlay support has been tweaked to work with the latest AppleTV update, improvements have been made to the search feature, and the whole app has been trimmed down in size and bug fixes have been applied. It's worth mentioning that not all features are available in the free version of doubleTwist Player, but the ability to play pinned tracks from Google Play Music is. We love it when premium features come with a zero cost app. If you are using doubleTwist Player, grab your update from the Google Play store, and if not you can find a download link after the break.

Dick Cheney Receives Heart Transplant

Former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney, 71, has received a heart transplant from an anonymous donor. The procedure took place yesterday.

Cheney, who has long battled heart problems, is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., outside of Washington, D.C.

His office said in a statement:

"Although the former Vice President and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift."

Cheney, who had been on the waiting list for a new heart for 20 months, had his first heart attack when he was 37 and underwent bypass surgery in 1988.

Car dealers are lying to your face

It?s not easy to buy a car when you?re upside down in your car loan. That is, you owe more on the vehicle you?re driving than it?s worth. It?s called negative equity.

So it?s mighty appealing when a dealer offers to ?pay off your trade -- no matter how much you owe.?

Warning: some of these ads are deceptive. The dealer never intends to pay off the negative equity of that trade-in. ?Fall for the pitch and you?ll get taken for a ride.

?How can a dealer pay you more for the car than they can sell it for?? asks Jack Gillis, author of The Car Book 2012. ?It makes no business sense. That?s why these deals are too good to be true.??

Last week, five dealers around the country agreed to settle complaints brought by the Federal Trade Commission that they did not ?pay off? trade-in vehicles with negative equity as promised in their advertisements.?

?The dealers actually rolled the amount of the negative equity into the loan package for the new vehicle,? says FTC attorney Malini Mithal. ?So you were ultimately responsible for paying off your trade, not the dealer.?

The dealers named in the government?s complaints are: 1) Billion Auto of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 2) Frank Myers AutoMaxx of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; 3) Key Hyundai of Manchester in Vernon, Connecticut; 4) Hyundai of Milford,? Connecticut, and? 5) and Ramey Motors of Princeton, West Virginia.

In settling with the government, the dealers do not admit doing anything wrong. But they promise not to make this sort of deceptive representation in the future.?

Protect yourself
You need to be very careful when you trade in a vehicle that has negative equity. Otherwise, you could get burned.?

Know if you are upside down on your car loan
Check Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book for the approximate value of your car and compare that to what you still owe on your loan.? If you owe more than the car is worth, you?re upside down.?

?Now is not the time to try and sell or trade in your car,? Gillis advises. ?Keep it until you are 'right side up' and then think about selling or trading in.??

Understand all the paperwork you will sign at the dealership?
Buying a car with a trade-in is really three different deals. Keep those transactions separate.?

• Know exactly what you?re getting for your trade-in. Gillis says most people can do better by selling it themselves.
• Know exactly what you?re paying for the new car.
• Negotiate the financing. What matters here is the APR or annual percentage rate.?

In many cases, the salesperson will try to wrap all three deals together by asking how much you can afford for a monthly payment. Don?t go down that path.?

?Unless you negotiate each of these three transactions separately, you have no idea what the value of each element is or if you?re actually paying too much,? Gillis warns.?

These cases are the first of their kind brought by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC?s Malini Mithal says her agency is ?very focused? right now on auto financing and leasing issues.? The commission would like to hear from anyone who believes they were the victim of an unfair or deceptive practice by a motor vehicle dealer. You can file a complaint online.?

More now, than ever, the number of Americans that are suffering from extreme credit card debt is growing and a large number of that population is seeking professional help for their credit card problems.

There is currently $800 billion in credit card debt in the US, with the average household holding around $14k in credit card debt and the number growing with each year, the popularity of credit counseling has been rising simultaneously.

Credit card debt is a problem for a lot of folks and can get unmanageable when you find yourself missing payments, and the total balances start climbing past your annual income. For those of us that are really stressing out about our credit card debt, and befuddled about what to do with ourselves credit counseling might be a viable alternative to bankruptcy.

Before you join any program you should really weight out the pros and cons, that rule should be important when you?re dealing with anything financial.

Credit Counseling Pros:

? Education: In the 1950s credit counseling was first established as a way to spread ?financial literacy? throughout the US. Credit counseling is still a very valuable educational resource for personal finance, and somebody who is deep in credit card debt is probably a personal finance misfit who has never had anybody speak to them in regards to things like debt, setting up a budget and credit cards. Good credit counseling revolves and focuses on educating the consumer and providing them with the tools, resources and information on how to avoid bankruptcy.

? Interest rates: If you choose to enter a debt management plan (DMP) than you will benefit from your credit counselor negotiating with your creditors lower interest rates for your credit cards.

? Harassment: Are you tired of harassing creditors calling you while you?re at home or trying to spend time with your family? Well if your credit counselor has done his job than those phone calls should most likely stop.

? Save Money: A good credit counselors is skilled at the art of negotiation and will negotiate lower interest rates for you, get credit card fees, and over the limit fees waived.

? Credit rating: In the long run getting rid of your debt, and paying off your credit cards in a timely fashion is going to eventually help your credit rating but even more important give you peace of mind.

Credit Counseling Cons:

? Monthly fees: Most credit counseling organizations are non profit, but that doesn?t mean a debt management plan isn?t going to cost you. Most DMPs will cost a consumer around $50 tops.

? Home buying: If you?re in credit counseling it will show up on your credit report and banks may have a hard time lending to a borrower that has supposed credit card problems. This is something to consider if you?re in the market for a home, but sometimes a credit counselor can take you off the program if you?re in the market for a home, temporarily, until you have closed on your homes.

? DMP: Some credit counseling organizations will take you off the debt management plan if you miss one payment, so you have to be cognizant and on top of your payments.

Credit counseling has helped many individuals out of debt, but that?s not to say that it comes without problems, getting out of debt takes discipline, hard work and sacrifice. You have to be committed to your personal finance growth if you want to become financially independent from debt.

CCC is a non-profit consumer credit counseling organization that is focused on spreading financial literacy throughout the US. Their credit counselors have been counseling consumers for over 20 years.

Talented but with unanswered questions, Cincinnati could sink or swim

On the day of the Cincinnati Reds' first spring visit to HoHoKam Park, the line of questioning was predictable when Dusty Baker gathered for a reunion visit with Cubs media members.

With another new Cubs manager in place, why not turn to one of Dale Sveum's predecessors for some 'what he should know' words of advice ? even though Baker's last game in a Cubs uniform is six years in the past?

"I can't tell him anything; we're trying to beat them,'' was Baker's initital response. "I like Dale, but we're still competitors. The better they do, the harder it makes it for us.''

In other words, Baker has enough problems of his own. In fact, his stay in Cincinnati has reached this critical juncture:

• Baker is in the last year of his contract, and the Reds' 2010 NL Central title also represents his only winning season in four in Cincinnati, where his record sits at 322-326.
• The expectation to win never has been higher in the Bob Castellini-Walt Jocketty regime, as sensing an opportunity due to likely drop offs for the Cardinals and Brewers, the Reds made a series of win-now off-season moves.
• Adding to the urgency is the fact that MVP candidate Joey Votto can become a free agent after the 2013 season. While he has said staying in Cincinnati is a possibility, it's more likely a long-shot given deals in the $150-215 million range given to Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder.

It all adds up to the Reds being one of the most intriguing teams to watch, especially coming out of the gate in April. Both individually and collectively, the possible outcomes are wide-ranging. They could be one of the NL's most-improved teams and get back into the postseason, or they could get their manager fired.

For a talented but enigmatic new No. 1 starter in Mat Latos, the Reds sent bounce-back candidate Edinson Volquez and top prospects Yonder Alonso, Brad Boxberger and Yasmani Grandal to San Diego.

Latos' talent is matched by a guarded personality that hasn't always responded well to instruction.

Alonso is penciled in as the Padres' regular first baseman, Boxberger will pitch out of their bullpen at some point this season, and Grandal will reach the big leagues by 2013 as a catcher.

The Reds also replaced longtime closer Francisco Cordero, who at 36 likely is about to enter a decline, with Ryan Madson, who broke out as the Phillies' closer last season. And they added an elite left-handed setup man in Sean Marshall, creating what should be one of the NL's deepest bullpens, with or without Aroldis Chapman.

"Add Marshall, Latos and Madson, and that's 25 percent of our staff ? that's a lot,'' Baker said. "Usually, one addition is pretty good, but we got three. We also have a healthy Homer (Bailey) and a healthy Johnny (Cueto). Last year at this time, we were without both, and Bronson (Arroyo) was sick (battling mononucleosis). By sheer health alone, you gotta like it.''

But just as quickly, Baker ? as managers on the spot tend to do ? was quick to point out the plusses of the veterans he no longer has on his roster.

"Cordero has what, 300 saves (actually 327)?,'' Baker said. "That's a lot of saves. How many does Madson have, 35 (actually 32)? One's an accomplished closer, and the other is a closer who's coming.

"Volquez already has been an All-Star; Latos is trying to be an All-Star. Volquez is trying to get back to where he was. Latos hasn't been there yet. I think Volquez will have a good year.''

Madson (elbow irritation) also has yet to pitch an inning in a Cactus League game. Neither has important left-handed setup man Bill Bray (groin strain), which has reignited the starter-or-reliever question regarding Chapman.

The Yankees' constant yo-yoing certainly did Joba Chamberlain's career no good, and the Reds could be repeating the pattern with Chapman. The Cuban left-hander wants to be a starter, but has yet to display the necessary pitch assortment and command, and needs time at Triple-A Louisville. No decision about where Chapman will begin the season has been announced, but Baker's words tell you which way he's leaning.

"The team always is more important,'' Baker said. "We're grooming him (to be a starter), but we can always shorten him back up. You can't go the other way.''

As talent-filled as the Reds roster is, they will be trying to get to the postseason with rookies at two key positions ? catcher Devin Mesoraco and shortstop Zack Cozart ? and that rarely pans out.

They let Ramon Hernandez sign with Colorado to give Mesoraco ? their 2007 No. 1 pick ? the majority of starts, with defensive standout Ryan Hanigan as the backup. Mesocraco can hit, as 41 homers in the last two seasons attests. And so far this spring, he has displayed much-improved throwing mechanics.

Cozart, the club's second-round pick in 2007, replaces offensively challenged Paul Janish as the regular shortstop despite only 11 games and 35 big-league at-bats last September before needing Tommy John surgery on his left arm. Cozart has had a big spring offensively to date.

A slight oddity of the Reds' 79-83 finish in 2011 was they outscored opponents 735-720. Their run total was seventh in the NL, and there's reason to expect improvement as Jay Bruce, 25, and Drew Stubbs, 27, mature, plus offensive improvements at catcher and shortstop, and the addition of Ryan Ludwick.

But another question mark is how much production the Reds will get from Scott Rolen, who will turn 37 on April 4, and played in only 65 games last season. Rolen is a middle-of-the-lineup key, as ideally, Baker wants a right-handed threat between left-handed-hitters Votto and Bruce. Rolen, coming off left shoulder surgery, has been productive this spring.

"You can project all you want to, but you have to see how things play out,'' Baker said. "That's the tough part for people to predict. That's what the season is about.''

Florida man lives to tell of 'shoot first' horror

MIAMI (Reuters) - On June 5, 2006, not long after Florida enacted the first "Stand Your Ground" law in the United States, unarmed Jason Rosenbloom was shot in the stomach and chest by his next-door neighbor after a shouting match over trash.

Exactly what happened that day in Clearwater, Florida, is still open to dispute. Kenneth Allen, a retired police officer, said he shot Rosenbloom because he was trying to storm into his house.

Rosenbloom told Reuters in a telephone interview this week he never tried to enter the house and was in Allen's yard, about 10 feet from his front door, when he was shot moments after he put his hands up.

Now living in Hawaii, Rosenbloom said he had been unaware of the growing outrage over last month's shooting in Sanford, Florida, of an unarmed black teenager by a neighborhood watch captain.

Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot by George Zimmerman on February 26 while walking back to the house where he was staying with his father in a gated community. Sanford police have not arrested Zimmerman, largely because Stand Your Ground requires them, without clear evidence of malice and in the absence of eyewitness testimony to the contrary, to accept Zimmerman's argument he was acting in self-defense.

Allen was not arrested in the shooting of Rosenbloom. Sergeant Tom Nestor of the Pinella's County Sheriff's Office said Allen was found to have acted in self-defense when he pumped two rounds into Rosenbloom with his 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

"He meant for me to be dead and he never called 911," said Rosenbloom, 36, adding that Allen, now 65, bent over him and using an expletive, warned him not to tangle "with an ex-cop" as he lay bleeding on the ground.

"The police closed it on his words alone," said Rosenbloom, explaining how the case that began with a complaint about him leaving eight trash bags on the curb instead of the regulation six, was closed after what he described as only a summary investigation.

"They made me the bad guy," he added.

Allen, contacted by phone in rural Georgia, said on Thursday he had "no regrets" about shooting Rosenbloom, describing him as a "little punk" who was "lucky to be alive."

He denied using profanity after shooting his neighbor, who he claimed had forced his way into the house and threatened to "beat my ass."

WIDE LATITUDE IN CASE OF SELF-DEFENSE

Police say Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which loosened formerly restrictive rules for using deadly force and gives people wide latitude to employ it in self-defense, was never officially cited in the Rosenbloom case.

But Rosenbloom considers himself one of the first victims of the new law in Florida and one of the few who has lived to give a first-hand account of how he said it can be used to shoot to kill with impunity.

The law, which extended the "castle doctrine" allowing residents to shoot would-be burglars or intruders entering their homes, gives legal protection to anyone, anywhere, to use deadly force in a case where a person is attacked and believes his life or safety is in danger.

One of the law's legislative sponsors said it was partly motivated by a rash of looting and theft after a series of hurricanes hit Florida in 2005.

Dubbed the "Shoot First, Ask Questions Later" law by critics, the statute extends even beyond self-defense and is seen by some as encouraging vigilante justice.

"A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity ... has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony," the law says.

"I think it's a very foolish law meant to turn a blind eye," Rosenbloom said, referring to how Stand Your Ground has been criticized in the past for protecting people who might formerly have been prosecuted for assault or murder.

'CONSISTENTLY AWFUL'

The law, approved under former Governor Jeb Bush after a big push by pro-gun advocates led by the National Rifle Association, was passed over numerous objections from the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association and state law enforcement officials. Florida's Republican governor, Rick Scott, announced the formation of a task force on Thursday to "thoroughly review" the law in the wake of the Martin shooting.

"Basically it's a law that fixed something that wasn't broken, and then it created a lot of problems," said William "Willie" Meggs, veteran state attorney for the 2nd Judicial Circuit in Tallahassee, the Florida capital.

"I have been an outspoken critic of the law since it came into existence and I would suspect we may be doing something about it after all the interest we're seeing in it now," he said.

According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, at least 23 states have passed laws similar to Florida's since 2005.

Florida does not keep comprehensive records to gauge the impact of Stand Your Ground. But the St. Petersburg Times found that in the first five years after the law was enacted, "justifiable homicides" in Florida more than tripled, to more than 100 in 2010 from just over 30. The Stand Your Ground law was invoked in at least 93 cases over that time period, involving 65 deaths.

Despite assertions from supporters of the law that it has worked as a deterrent of violent crime, Dennis Henigan, a lawyer and veteran vice president of the Brady Campaign, said the state was still saddled with a "tragic record" on violent crime.

"It's quite remarkable how consistently awful Florida's record has been," Henigan said. "It takes some work to finish in the top five in violent crime among all the states every single year for the last 30 years."

'NOT A 'LICENSE TO KILL'

Supporters of Stand Your Ground say it has worked well, while arguing it should not be applied in the Zimmerman case.

"It's not a 007 license to kill," said Sean Caranna, who heads a gun rights group called Florida Carry.

Republican State Representative Dennis Baxley, one of the authors of the Stand Your Ground law, said it did not protect people who pursued and confronted their victims, as occurred in Sanford, according to lawyers for the parents of the dead teenager.

"That's where he (Zimmerman) stepped out on thin ice away from protection of this statute," he said.

Defending Stand Your Ground, Baxley said that while errors may occur, such as the death of Martin, it was important that the law err on the side of those who fear they are facing "a perceived" threat.

"That's good public policy. I think we have a good statute and I would hate to lose anything in it that protects people from harm. It saves lives," Baxley added.

Rosenbloom still has health problems stemming from his injuries and a bullet remains lodged in his right hip.

"Now I live as far away from Florida in America as you can freaking get," he said, explaining his recent move to Hawaii was aimed at leaving a lot of bad memories behind in what he now calls the "Gunshine State," a play on Florida's nickname, "the Sunshine State."

His family was struck by a second tragedy only three days after he was shot by Allen. Rosenbloom said his younger brother Joshua was shot and killed by police after threatening to commit suicide by disemboweling himself with a sword.

Twenty-year-old Joshua Rosenbloom, a manic depressive, was acting out after hearing his brother was in intensive care in a Tampa hospital, recovering from his gunshot wounds, Rosenbloom said. He was shot three times in his bedroom when police approached while he was still holding the sword in his hands, his older brother said.

'Dark Knight Rises' Is Real ... And Bound For Comic-Con?

Batman fans received what will probably be the most important news of the pre-release for "The Dark Knight Rises": The film actually exists.

As we reported, Christopher Nolan screened a rough cut of his final Batman movie for Warner Bros. brass last week, and the legion of fans breathed a collective sigh of relief. We now know that a completed version of the film is real, and it's not just a trailer we've watched obsessively since ... December?

Yup, it's been three months since we've seen any new footage from the most anticipated movie of 2012, and we've felt every Batman-less minute of it. You go three months with nothing more than a squeak from the new Nolan Batman movie, and you start to think some paranoid thoughts. Is the movie ever coming out? Is the movie even real? But worry not, borderline psychotic Gothamite: "The Dark Knight Rises" is real and finished, presumably in the form of a four-hour rough cut. There's no official word on the reaction to the screening, as of yet.

Thankfully, the news of the rough cut closely preceded the leak of a new plot synopsis, taken from the plaque of a film cell that will eventually go on sale over at Film Cells Ltd. The cell shows Batman, Bane and Commissioner Gordon with the caption: "When Commissioner Gordon stumbles upon a plot to destroy the city from within, Bruce Wayne gets back into action as the Batman. Waiting for him is the mysterious Selina Kyle and Bane, a lethal adversary on a crusade to tear apart Batman's legacy piece by piece."

Granted, the "synopsis" amounts to "Hey, Batman, Bane and Commissioner Gordon are all going to be in the same movie. Can't really talk about it," but we can't really complain about new information at this point.

In the realm of Batman rumors that could possibly affect you — wait, let me clarify. This rumor might affect you if you were lucky enough to snag passes to San Diego Comic-Con before they sold out in 6.5 seconds. There's a chance Nolan could appear at San Diego Comic-Con this year. It would be the first time ever for the director, since his previous two Batman movies debuted before the convention. This time around, Batman will rise the week after SDCC, so speculation has already begun that Nolan could make his final bow at the geekiest of all gatherings.

If you start to consider that, the nerdy possibilities are endless. What will the panel include? Who from the cast will show up? Are we talking about an actual screening here? Can I go? Why can't I go? Please let me go!

Listen, I'm all for going into a highly anticipated movie not knowing much, and I'm glad that my spoiler levels for "Rises" have been kept to a generous low. But there should be a little more out there to tease us. In the race of the summer tentpoles, "The Dark Knight Rises" is resting on its laurels while "Prometheus" and "The Avengers" are dropping kick-ass trailers like they were nothing. It's getting to the point where Warner Bros. might need to start considering that slapping "Christopher Nolan" and "Batman" on a theater marquee might not be enough to win the summer.

And when you do finally cut a second theatrical trailer, Warner Bros., please spare us the 10-second trailer of the trailer. Those are just terrible.
