Muscle Building Not Just for Athletes | Bodybuilding, Supplements ...

So how important is our muscular-skeletal system? And is it inevitable that we will lose mass amounts of muscle due to the very fact that we are aging?

Our muscular-skeletal system is imperative to keep us moving. However, the system also contributes to effective metabolic function, which includes immune function support. So, scientifically speaking, if the human body loses muscle mass, the result is a severe decrease in functional movement, strength, metabolic function and immune support.

In other words, according to Life Extension Magazine, ?This suggests that frail elderly people with decreased muscle mass may have poorer outcomes after major surgery or traumatic accidents, since they lack the metabolic reservoir of muscle mass to support the immune system and other bodily systems during the recovery process.?

A research study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found ?If there is a preexisting deficiency of muscle mass before trauma, the acute loss of muscle mass and function may push an individual over a threshold that makes recovery of normal function unlikely to ever occur. For this reason, greater than 50 percent of women older than 65 years who break a hip in a fall never walk again.?

Starting at the age of 40 there is a decline in muscle mass, and after the age of 75 it rapidly increases in loss. However some individuals suffer from a condition referred to as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia as defined by the Agricultural Research Service occurs ?when muscle mass begins to decline at a rate of about 1 percent per year, from the age of 40.?

The true term sarcopenia was proposed by Irwin Rosenberg, in 1989, ?to describe the age-related decrease in muscle mass.? Although there are other conditions that can cause muscle mass reduction, they are not considered to be sarcopenia.

Per Rosenberg?s definition, as a geriatric syndrome, the definitive causes are not fully researched and understood. At this time, Agricultural Research Services has concluded that ?this gradual loss has been tied to protein deficiency, lack of exercise and increased frailty among the elderly.?

However, it has been found that sarcopenia can also occur in individuals who are physically active. According to the majority of the limited research, sarcopenia has many contributing factors.

?Like osteoporosis, sarcopenia is a multifactorial disease process that may result from sub-optimal hormone levels, inadequate dietary protein, other nutritional imbalances, lack of exercise, oxidative stress, and inflammation,? according to Life Extension Magazine.

As mentioned, sarcopenia and osteoporosis are connected, as Nick Mitchell?s Ultimate Performance blog notes:

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are directly related conditions, one often following the other. Muscles generate the mechanical stress required to keep our bones healthy; when muscle activity is reduced it exacerbates the osteoporosis problem and a vicious circle is established, which accelerates the decline in health and functionality.

Although osteoporosis has had more traction when it comes to research and public knowledge, sarcopenia is now being ?recognized as one of the major public health problems now facing industrialized nations, and its effects are expected to place increasing demands on public health care systems worldwide.?

As a public health concern, obesity is at the forefront due to its health consequences and the increasing demand the obesity rates are placing on our health care system. Often those who are obese have quite a few of the key contributing factors of sarcopenia.

Unfortunately, common solutions to reduce body mass on an obese individual have been calorie restricted diets, with limited exercise. Although the result of a low calorie, nutrient restricted diet, as well as some cardiovascular exercise, can achieve weight loss, this fails to address the impact this may have on muscle mass and bone density. A healthy eating program that is designed to reduce body mass should take into consideration increasing muscle mass and bone density.

When designing a body mass reduction program, ?the desired result should be identified in terms of outcomes on muscle mass, strength, and metabolic function, as opposed to traditional measures of exercise training, such as the maximal oxygen consumption, which have little direct relation to health outcomes, according to the study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In other words a body mass reduction program that is designed to include proper nutrition and physical activity will also have a positive effect in reducing the risk of sarcopenia as well as osteoporosis.

Although this is only the beginning of discussions, when it comes to the needs of stopping or preventing sarcopenia it should be noted that the other key factors such as sub-optimal hormones, oxidative stress and inflammation are linked to osteoporosis as well as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and the list goes on. In essence the loss of muscle as we age is not inevitable but it is preventable, as are many of these other diseases. However, as our population continues to maintain unhealthy lifestyles, aging and loss of muscle mass are inevitable.

Business Value of Social Media in the Retail Industry

The business environment is changing rapidly due to a combination of demographic, organizational and technological forces. Social media represent one of the latest vehicles of rapid change in the way people work, interact and consume, and companies are trying to figure out how to generate business value out of these changes. Here we look at how they do it in the retail industry.

Social media involve both public social utilities (such as Facebook), which companies use for connecting to customers and prospects, and internal social platforms within companies that help people and teams to communicate and collaborate better. The retail industry is becoming increasingly more ?digital? and is wisely mixing both types of social media in order to empower business.
Companies in retailing, which is a vast industry and includes firms like supermarkets, specialty stores and department stores, had traditionally invested in technology for transaction functions (e.g. hardware and software used for checkouts). It is now increasingly using technology for strategic planning. Over the years, we had already witnessed an increase in ?data-based? decision making, which is empowered by Point of Sale (PoS) data (i.e. data collected in checkouts) combined with statistical analyses. These analyses are used to drive supply chain, merchandizing, and other planning activities in a more centralized way, thus reducing the reliance on stores? personnel. This has improved business via operational efficiency (e.g. better inventory management) or through processes such as marketing (e.g. offering targeted promotions).

Can companies improve their strategic planning even more? The data and knowledge acquired from social media, although not as structured as PoS, allows firms to develop new products and expand their markets. Companies already gather data from customers and prospects through public social utilities: they are, for instance, tracking what people say in Twitter about their products and services. Some others companies, such as Sears, have created their own communities and blogs (MySears) where customers post and express their ideas, which help innovating in terms of products. Kmart is combining their online gaming community at MyKmart.com with offline retail activity by taking video game reviews from the site and placing them on store shelves.

What about internal social platforms for collaboration within companies and with key partners? There are two main benefits:

A. Employee collaboration will uncover additional valuable customer insights directly from employees (complementing the data obtained directly from customers). Best Buy, for example, receives customer insights from engaged employees that share direct customer feedback, ideas and insights (Best Buy also has its proprietary social platform, IdeaX, for asking customers to suggest ideas).

Employee collaboration is particularly relevant in retailing because stores and teams are usually geographically dispersed. Tools like wikis and blogs provide a ?central? platform to share and collaborate on information / knowledge across stores and corporate. Blogs constitute a source of information about what is happening at the store, whereas Wikis present an opportunity to capture the experiential knowledge of some employees: one example is category management personnel (those who strategically break down products into discrete groups of similar or related products). The knowledge generated can be used for best practice sharing, inducting new personnel, etc.1

B. Collaborating with suppliers and manufacturers can improve overall supply chain efficiency and forecasting, since the projections of retailers and suppliers usually differ.

The beautiful thing about the retail industry is that it shows very clearly how knowledge is being created though both external and internal social media: both employees and customers can co-create with the company. Interactions between buyers, planners, supply chain people, and store managers in issues like assortments planning and promotions are surely improving decision making and bring the business closer to the customers they serve. The key for business is how to analyze the tons of extra social data that are emerging from social media.

Getting Together | Trilogy Life Blog | Active Lifestyle Communities

March 10, 2012
Posted by: Trilogy at Rio Vista

Whether you?re organizing a big family outing or just hanging out with your grandchildren for the weekend, it can be difficult to find an activity that everyone will enjoy?especially if your family includes teens or small children. If you?re looking for a fresh alternative to dining out or catching a movie, here are some interesting ideas that are sure to please all ages.

1. Generational golfing

Love hitting the green? Introduce the whole family to your hobby. Head out to the golf range and sign everyone up for a lesson, or just hit some balls around for fun. Spending time at the golf range may be the best option, as playing a full round of golf may not interest everyone in the group.

If you have younger grandchildren, consider a few games of miniature golf. The smaller clubs are perfect for little hands, and short greens make it easy for an adult to help a child who?s struggling with a hole.

2. The play?s the thing

In the mood for entertainment? Rather than heading to the theaters for yet another overpriced movie, take in a live performance. You don?t have to hop a train to Broadway?chances are, there?s a community theater or two in your area that stages regular productions.

You can also look to your local high schools or area colleges for plays and musical reproductions. School drama departments tend to stagger performances throughout the year, so there?s usually an upcoming show to catch.

3.? Expand your shopping horizons

Take your family on a shopping expedition away from suburbia. Find a local farmers market, craft fair, or flea market and make a day of it. You can pack a lunch to eat in the car, or plan to sample food from the vendors at the market. Make sure to bring a few tote bags along to carry all your purchases.

Even if the weather isn?t cooperative, the open market can still be an option. More areas are offering year-round indoor flea markets that attract a wide variety of vendors.

4. Visit local heroes

If you have elementary school-age or younger grandchildren, one guaranteed crowd-pleaser is a visit to your local fire station. Most stations are happy to arrange for family tours?just be sure to call ahead. Kids love climbing into fire trucks and meeting real firemen (and firewomen). You might even learn a few things you didn?t know about your community.

5. Make a difference

Have a great time and help make the world a better place by organizing a family volunteer day. Many local garden clubs recruit volunteers for sprucing up public parks and other outdoor spaces. You can also volunteer to help with a meal at a local soup kitchen, or work with an animal shelter or rescue organization.

Have you tried any of these ideas? What other activities have brought your family together?
